WHY CAPE OF FIRE?
The CAPE OF FIRE (COF) website has been around for several months now and has found a useful niche – providing relevant information to those living in areas of high wildfire risk. To complement the website we have now added this blog as an suitable avenue for news and comment.
.
Background :
Besides creating public awareness of the dangers of wildfires, the COF website served as a rallying point for those of us who wanted to challenge the City, Navy, PWD and other landowners for blatantly neglecting their responsibilities, by allowing invasive alien plants to spread virtually unchecked throughout the South Peninsula – creating an extremely dangerous situation around our homes.
Following the initiative of the CAPE OF FIRE website, the Glencairn Fire Watch (GFW), a community based fire risk awareness group, was formed. The GFW began by putting pressure on the City and also public and private landowners to get their act together and start dealing with their responsibilities to make the Southern Peninsula more Fire Safe.
The aims have now been broadened and the movement has spread to other South Peninsula communities and liasion with the Working on Fire organisation has led to the first steps to forming Firewise Communities in the South Peninsula and discussion towards establishing a South Peninsula volunteer fire fighting unit, through the VWS organisation. Cooperation with the authorities has improved and meetings are now being held on a regular basis between the communities and City officials;SANParks; the Navy; Working on Fire; the VWS and many other interested parties to specifically address the Fire Risk situation in the South Peninsula.
