BIRDS
With its diverse habitats, ranging from rocky mountain tops to beaches and open sea, the Cape of Good Hope is home to a wide variety of birds. Over 250 species have been recorded here, of which more than 100 are known to have bred. Visitors include migrant shorebirds from the northern hemisphere, and albatrosses and petrels from the sub-Antarctic. “Bush birds” tend to be rather scarce because of the coarse scrubby nature of the fynbos vegetation. When flowering, however, the proteas and ericas do attract sunbirds, sugarbirds and other species in search of nectar.
For most of the year you will find more small birds in the coastal thicket than in the fynbos.
On the Atlantic coast side Olifantsbos Bay is a good starting point for waders and shore birds as well as the beaches south to Maclear Beach. The rocks at the Cape of Good Hope are excellent view sites (bring along a telescope) for pelagic birds, especially after a winter north-west gale.
The False Bay beaches are good for waders and shore birds ‘out of season’ when they are not crowded with holiday-makers. A walk along any of the trails will result in a good count of sightings.
