WALKS
WALKS: The Friends have a monthly walk on the third Sunday of the month, through wind but not (heavy) rain. We meet inside the Gate at the entrance to Cape Point at 9am. There is no charge but you need a wild card/R80 entrance fee to get into the reserve. Bring water, a snack, hat and warm clothing if the weather looks moody.
On April 17 we enjoyed a walk up Rooihoogte, down crossing Link Rd and on to Sirkelsvlei, back to the Red Track and the parked cars.
The day before our walk there was a howling gale but we had beautiful weather which made for very pleasant walking for the ten of us. Unfortunately because of the dry and windy summer there was nothing really usual apart from the usual Erica coccinea, E.abietina, E.obliqua, E.pulchella and E.corifolia. We were pleased to see good flowers on the Saltera sarcocolla, also a white one and then to our delight and surprise Cameron spotted a Cyrtanthus ventricosus which is only supposed to flower after fire. We can only surmise that the recent fires across the bay and resulting smoke and debris as well as the local heat had triggered the flowering of this unusual plant. We walked on to Sirkelsvlei, enjoying two tea stops and finished back at the red track. (Report from Jayne McDermid – walk leader)
