Copper theft
I would like to report that on 54 Hopkirk Way, Glencairn, copper piping has been stolen between about 2330 and 0730 on the 31st March. Copper piping, a tap and lead piping were stolen. The incident has been reported to the police. The person living opposite 54 Hopkirk Way told their neighbour that he picked up the copper thieves on his camera. Three came up Kenmuir Steps at 0310 and two went down Kenmuir steps; one at 04.14 and the other at 04.16 on the 31st March 2012. Security
On 31 January a German guest of ours had his credit card pshished(?) at the FNB ATM in Simon’s Town. He admits that he was ‘helped’ by a well dressed black man. His card was then used for 35 small transactions (one in Canada) which amounted to R90000. We do not always get to warn our guests of this common problem so why can’t we put a sign at the ATM relating this last con stating the date and the modus operandi? Thanks Denise Brinkman

GLENCAIRN VALLEY SECURITY IMPORTANT—THIS AFFECTS YOU PROPOSAL TO INTRODUCE A NEW SECURITY MEASURE Dear Glencairn Valley resident, We live in one of the most exquisite and peaceful areas of the Cape Peninsula. Thanks to the efforts of the local SAPS, the Community Policing Forum, the Glencairn Neighbourhood Watch and the private security companies, the level of crime we experience in our area is relatively low. With your support we aim to keep it that way and, if possible, reduce it further. The tendency, in areas where crime is more prevalent, is often to retreat behind ever higher walls, topped with … Continue reading

Do it yourself surveillance system
Hi all at Keep Safe, I found this on the web: http://www.simplehelp.net/2006/09/27/how-to-use-your-pc-and-webcam-as-a-motion-detecting-and-recording-security-camera/ It shows how to use your PC and a simple webcam for cctv motion detector surveillance – I’m using an “El Cheapo” 5 megapixel camera from Osman’s in Lansdowne (R99.95) and it works – obviously it has limitations (being a cheapo) such as it can’t pick up pic’s in the dark and it can’t handle bright sunlight – for these you need a better webcam – but it certainly shows how one can put a surveillance system together on a shoe-string budget. If anyone … Continue reading
